Analysis of questionnaire results

Of the 30 people who took part in our survey 57% were female and 43% were male. We tried to make sure that equal amounts of people from each gender took part, this way we would not have a biased view from either of the genders.

Of all the people we surveyed they all agreed that they enjoyed watching movies. Therefore this gives us an indication that people would possibly watch our movie.

The majority of people we surveyed were between the ages of 16-24, this is because this is our main target audience. We therefore wanted to see what would appeal to them. We surveyed 3 other age groups just to see what their opinions of thriller movies were.

Of the people we surveyed they felt that the two most important characters in a film were the hero and mysterious character. We therefore need to incorporate a hero or a mysterious character in our opening sequence to please our target audience.

We planned on making our film a psychological thriller; this was confirmed to be one of the favoured film types of the people we surveyed. This therefore confirms that we should make our movie a psychological movie.

These results shows that people believe, that acting, special effects/ graphics and characters are the most important aspect in thrillers rather than music and credits. Credits seem to be the least important aspect in the peoples opinion, this means that we should focus on the acting, characters and special effects in our thriller.

This pie chart shows that people mostly want to receive Suspense, nerve wrecking tension and Intense excitement. Anxiety was the least emotion that people want receiver therefore we need to work on building suspense, excitement and tension in are sequence to engage the audience and avoid creating too much anxiety in the thriller sequence.

This clearly indicated to us that the opening sequence of a film is very important, only one person out of 30 said that it was not important. Therefore we need make sure the sequence is done very well in order to engage and retain the audience.

This pie chart showed that people mostly want to receive little or do not mind how much revealed in an opening sequence. Therefore we need make sure we do not incorporate too much action in are opening sequence as it may not satisfy our target audience.

This pie chart shows that horror and action is the most preferred genre, this is a positive indication as our thriller is an action packed horror, therefore our thriller movie has demand and is favoured.

Question 11 of our questionnaire asked people if they thought the opening sequence of a film is important, and why they think that is. 29 out of the 30 people we asked said that the opening sequence of a film is important/ very important. The majority of people said that it was important because it needs to set up the scene and story line, it also determines if the movie is going to be good or not and therefore if they would continue to view the movie. Some people also stated that a movie sequence needs to grab their attention in order to engage and retain them. Someone stated that it needs to build excitement, all of this gives us a brief understanding of what is expected in a thriller sequence and how important it is. This also helps us make our thriller movie sequence as capturing and engaging as possible in order satisfy the viewers.

Research into opening title sequence

Fight Club

These three subtitles are surrounded by backgrounds which are interesting for the audience to watch. The text size and font go with the background. For example, for the main title, ‘Fight Club, there are boulders which squish the writing which the font size reflects. Also, in the third picture, a light is shined, the writing glows to continue the same affect. However, the text font and size are specifically for this film, as in, you wouldn’t have the same backgrounds and font style for another film.

JCVD
The next two subtitles reflect the word/theme of army, as when we think of an army writing, we immediately think of dark orange, and cracked up writing. This type of writing also shows negativity as well as the stereotypical. With this style writing and the scene behind, we would get the impression that the film is about an army, or a war which will break out.

Public Enemies

As well as unanimated films which tend to not have computer based credits, some films use subtitles in the way above which is mainly produced on the computer. This technique is affective as the patterns are subtle, but the colours are loud. Also, it favours the film as it is evident that it is about batman and superman. The font size and style looks bold and strong which gives the opening title sequence something to look at. It also gets the information across to the audience that the film is about superman as this style font is related with him as it is used in most of the films which involves superman. This type of animation and font may not be suitable for a thriller as it doesn’t get the audience in the mood to watch a thriller.

We will use this information to produce an opening sequence which portrays our theme and our style of movie. This research has helped us to think about our theme and to produce a sequence about it to warm the audience up. For example, ‘JCVD’, has an opening sequence which the audience will immediately think that the film will contain lots of blood, guns and
violence.

Film Title Brainstorm

This is a brainstorm of all our title ideas. We also tried to find interesting titles in Latin to make the title seem more mysterious. The title for our film is "Reinventing Your Exit".

Development of Ideas

This sheet helped us develop our ideas into an opening sequence. We started off with the simple idea of basing our opening sequence on a dream. The sheet made us think about what locations we may want to use, what characters and roles we should issue and what clues we may give to the viewer that it is a thriller movie.
